Scott Tucci was named Administration Star of the Year due to his exceptional dedication, leadership, and versatility. He consistently goes above and beyond, exemplifying hospitality through his professionalism, problem-solving, and teamwork. ​Highlights include stepping in during a snowstorm to ensure a flawless event for 800 attendees, revitalizing the hotel's social media presence with a 40% engagement increase, streamlining supply chain processes, and taking initiative in various tasks outside his role. His attention to detail, calm demeanor under pressure, and ability to lead with empathy make him a standout in the industry.

Michael Krause was named Allied Member Employee Star of the year because he exemplifies the very best of hospitality education. His impact reaches far beyond the classroom—serving as a mentor, advisor, and champion for students as they navigate their careers. Countless Kendall graduates credit Krause for helping them secure internships and first roles with leading hotel brands. The institution’s deep engagement with industry partners, alumni, and professional associations creates invaluable opportunities that bridge education and real-world practice. Above all, Krause’s genuine investment in each student’s growth inspires confidence, cultivates talent, and shapes the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Bell Staff Star of the Year
Mirham Mahmutagic, with the Omni Chicago Hotel, was named Bell Staff Star Person of the Year because he exemplifies extraordinary compassion, patience, and dedication. When an elderly, non-English-speaking guest was in distress after missing her flight, he personally escorted her to O’Hare, navigated incorrect ticket information, overcame language barriers, and coordinated with airline staff to ensure she was safely rebooked. He kept her family and the hotel informed throughout, turning a stressful situation into a successful outcome. Adonys went far beyond his duties with genuine kindness—perfectly reflecting the heart of true hospitality.

Community Service Star of the Year
The Marriott Business Council of Chicago was named the Community Service Star of the Year for exemplifying Marriott International’s enduring Spirit to Serve through its unwavering commitment to community engagement. Grounded in a company culture that prioritizes giving back, our Chicago-area hotels unite under a shared mission to make a meaningful impact throughout the year. Each January, the Business Council sets ambitious annual goals for volunteer hours, funds raised, and outreach events. These goals are supported by a thoughtfully crafted calendar of initiatives, reviewed regularly in business council meetings and made accessible to all associates via intranet and market-wide communication. Participation is encouraged at every level of the organization, fostering a culture of service and inclusion. Progress is tracked and shared through an online reporting tool, ensuring accountability, celebrating achievements, and inspiring continued momentum across all properties.

Jen Rickleman was chosen as Department Division Head Star of the Year because she leads by example and shows unmatched dedication to her team and property. As AGM of the Embassy Suites East Peoria, she wears countless hats—supporting housekeeping, assisting the kitchen, inspecting rooms, leading team huddles, and jumping in wherever she’s needed, often before others even spot an issue. Jen never seeks recognition, yet she ensures every associate feels seen and supported. Her energy, patience, and commitment to staying sharp through ongoing training make her an exceptional leader and an invaluable partner in every aspect of daily operations.

Brian Ortega, The Ashburn Restaurant at Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel, was named Front of House Star of the Year for his extraordinary dedication, versatility, and positive spirit. In nearly two years with the company, he has excelled in multiple roles—busser, barback, server, cocktail server, and in-room dining—often covering two positions in a single shift and working six days a week without complaint. Brian’s hard work, teamwork, and kindness consistently uplift his colleagues and elevate the guest experience.

Dennis Jones, Hotel Arista, is chosen as Back of House Star of the Year for his dedication, professionalism, and inspiring leadership. Since starting as a Steward in 2017, Dennis has grown into a passionate and reliable Stewarding Supervisor, carrying forward the legacy of his late mentor with pride. Calm under pressure, he ensures the kitchen runs smoothly during busy events and unexpected challenges, always leading by example. His commitment to safety, best practices, and supporting his team makes him a steady, respected anchor and a role model for excellence in the back of house.

Nikki Espana is named First Level Supervisor Star of the Year for her exceptional leadership, dedication, and heart at the Park Hyatt Chicago. As Assistant Front Office Manager, she knows every guest personally and consistently supports her team with care and encouragement. Nicole leads by example, delivering first-class service that reflect the highest standards of hospitality and inspires everyone around her.

Casey Frankel is the Guest Service Star of the Year for her exceptional dedication, creativity, and personalized approach to hospitality. As Chef Concierge at Park Hyatt Chicago and a member of Les Clefs d’Or, she consistently goes above and beyond—creating memorable experiences, thoughtful gifts, and innovative programs such as  the Canada Goose Coat Concierge during winter storms. Casey’s warmth, expertise, and attention to detail leave a lasting impression on guests and colleagues alike, earning her recognition as a standout ambassador of exceptional service.

Aja Miller is the Guest Service Star of the Year for her exceptional dedication, warmth, and attention to detail. At The Westin O’Hare, she anticipates guest needs with personalized touches—remembering names, preferences, and special requests—and has created tools to streamline and enhance the guest experience. Aja also excels as a trainer, inspiring new team members with her passion and expertise. Her radiant personality, professionalism, and innovative approach make every guest feel welcomed and valued.

Sheila Miller of the Gwen Hotel was named Housekeeping Employee of the Year for her exceptional dedication, attention to detail, and community spirit. She goes above and beyond to keep guest areas immaculate and welcoming, while also enhancing employee spaces with thoughtful touches. Sheila’s commitment extends beyond the hotel—she actively supports community organizations and maintains “The Gwen Garden,” fostering care and connection among guests and colleagues.

Maintenance Star of the Year
Brian Wilson of the Embassy Suites by Hilton East Peoria was named Maintenance Star of the Year for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and problem-solving. Since joining Embassy Suites East Peoria, he has taken full ownership of the Engineering Department, tackling every task with urgency, positivity, and a can-do attitude. Under his leadership, the hotel achieved its best QA score in years, driven by his team’s motivation and perseverance. From repairing the lobby fountain and iron, to resurfacing the pool and upgrading back-of-house areas, Brian’s work has transformed both the hotel and the culture of his department, making a lasting impact on guests and colleagues alike.

Raquel Toro was awarded Star Manager of the Year for her exceptional leadership, vision, and results-driven approach. From Senior Sales Manager to Associate Director of Sales & Marketing at the JW Marriott Chicago, she consistently exceeds goals, uncovers growth opportunities, and builds lasting client relationships. Raquel leads with positivity, creativity, and a commitment to developing her team, inspiring excellence while fostering collaboration and support. Her strategic mindset, dedication, and ability to elevate both her team and the guest experience make her an outstanding leader.

Edmund Amegatcher was named Security Star of the Year for his exceptional compassion, quick thinking, and dedication to safety with his work at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown. During a chaotic Memorial Day parade, he went above and beyond to assist a disoriented elderly guest, personally escorting her through restricted traffic and ensuring her well-being. Edmund’s empathy, professionalism, and calm decisiveness turn potentially dangerous situations into moments of care, embodying the highest standards of security and hospitality.

Hotel Arista was awarded the IHLA Sustainability Star of the Industry for its outstanding commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The hotel has implemented initiatives that reduce energy and water use, minimize waste, and promote sustainable operations throughout the property. By integrating eco-friendly practices into daily operations and engaging both staff and guests, Hotel Arista demonstrates leadership in creating a greener, more sustainable hospitality experience.

Our Strategic Partners are famously generous to the IHLA team—not only through their service, but through the friendship, support, and unforgettable laughs they bring to every interaction. This year, one Strategic Partner was recognized for their generosity to IHLA and what they bring the team throughout the year – Boston Beer, led by Bryan Farbiz, was named IHLA’s Strategic Partner of the Year.

The Mixologist Star of the Year goes to Jeremy Foissac for shaking up the scene with his unforgettable creation — the Kyoto Punch! You’ll find Jeremy behind the bar at Four Seasons Adorn, where he’s always stirring, shaking, and showing off the kind of mixology magic that turns a cocktail into an experience. Cheers to Jeremy!

Unity Star of the Year
IHLA created a new award this year – recognizing those members who take the time out of their extremely busy schedules to go through the nomination process and submit applications for their team members.  These year’s Unity recipient was the Omni Chicago Hotel.  Congratulations!
